Major General Indunil Priyanka Ranasinghe was born on 24th April 1964. He joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 01st October 1985 and underwent basic military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy and Officers Training School, Pakistan. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 24th July 1986 having placed 1st in the Order of Merit in the batch of 54 Officer Cadets, including 03 Air Force Officer Cadets. Then he was posted to the 1st Reconnaissance Regiment Sri Lanka Armoured Corps. Major General Ranasinghe is married to Mrs Krishnie Ranasinghe and blessed with two daughters.

Major General Ranasinghe received his school education at the Bandarawela Central College and he passed General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination and General Certificate of Education (Advance Level) in 1978 and in 1981 respectively. He holds a Degree of Master of Defence Studies from University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and Degree of Master of Science in National Security and War Studies from National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan. Presently he is a final year postgraduate of the University of Rajarata, Mihintale, Sri Lanka following a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. In his military education, he was graduated from the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan havening attended National Security and War Course in 2014 / 2015 and the Sri Lanka Army Command and Staff College in 2000, where he secured the 2nd position which enabled him to attend an overseas Staff Course. During his military career he has gained a wealth of experience by attending a large number of local and overseas courses which includes Platoon Commander Course, Fighting in Build-up Area Course, Management and Leadership Development Course in Sri Lanka, Basic Armour Young Officers Course, Automotive Instructors Course, Higher Defence Orientation Course in India, Junior Officers Leadership Course, Mid-Career Course (Armour) and Unit Commanders Course (Armour) in Pakistan, Armour Captain’s Career Course in Fort Knox USA, Basic Law of Armed Conflict Course in Malaysia and Security Sector Reform in Countries Emerging from Conflict Diploma Course at the University of Bradford, UK.

Major General Ransinghe during his military career has served in all the operational areas of North and East in Sri Lanka and held many key appointments in the Reconnaissance Regiment and Armoured Regiment such as Troop Leader, Intelligence / Signal Officer, Adjutant, Squadron Second in Command, Squadron Commander, and Unit Second in Command. He has also commanded two Armour Regiments for a period of over three years. Major General Ranasinghe has actively taken part in number of major offensive operations conducted by Sri Lanka Army as a field commander including the Humanitarian Operation in defeating LTTE in May 2009 as the Commander Armoured Brigade.

He is also a recipient of ‘Rana Wickrama Padakkama’ and Rana Sura Paddakkama’ each on two occasions for his acts of bravery performed voluntarily and for the distinguished conducted in the face of the enemy and several other service and campaign medals. Major General Ranasinghe has also served as a Staff Officer and an Instructor in various Headquarters, Institutes and Directorates. These appointments includes Officer Instructor at the Combat Training School and at the Armoured Corps Training Centre, Staff Officer Grade III / II at the Directorate of Personnel Administration, Army Headquarters, Staff Officer Grade I at the Joint Operations Headquarters, Commandant Armoured Corps Training Centre, Chief Instructor Training Wing and Commanding Officer, Officer Cadet Wing Sri Lanka Military Academy, Colonel Military Secretary, Army Headquarters, Commander 551 Infantry Brigade at Nagarkovil, Commander Armoured Brigade, Centre Commandant Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Deputy General Officer Commanding 52 Division, Brigadier (Doctrine & Development) Army Training Command (ARTRAC), Commandant Sri Lanka Military Academy and General Officer Commanding 56 Infantry Division. He has also served as a Staff Officer at the Defence Review Committee (DRC) which was set up to examine and report on matters pertaining to higher defence control, revision of regulations made under the relevant service acts and on the future organization and structure of the armed forces in the year 2002.

Major General Ranasinghe apart from his military appointments has served voluntarily as the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation from 2003 to 2004. Future, he has been appointed as a member of the Accreditation Committee of 10th South Asia Games in Sri Lanka. He was also served as a Vice President of the National Rifle Association of Sri Lanka from 2010 to 2011, President of the Basketball Referees Association in 2012 / 2013, President Army Elle Committee in 2012 / 2013 and President Army Golf Committee in 2014 / 2015. Moreover, he has contributed his service to Sir Lanka Autosports Drivers Association as a committee member in 2013 / 2014.

He was a keen sports man representing his school in athletics, football and cricket. His pass time includes reading and watching TV.
