Legal aid is the provision of assistance to people who are unable to afford legal representation and access to the court system due to poverty, illiteracy etc. Legal aid is regarded as central in providing access to justice by ensuring equality before the law, and thus considered to be a human right as well.

Legal Aid Centre of the Faculty of Law of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University is committed to assist the disadvantaged, underprivileged and marginalized people to seek access to justice by providing free legal advice and counseling, facilitating mediation and providing legal representation to resolve their legal problems.

Legal Aid is available at the KDU Legal Aid Centre in the following fields:

 

Human Rights ● Consumer Affairs
Elders’ Rights ● Family Matters
Rights of the Disabled ● Industrial Relations
Women’ Rights ● Property Disputes
Children’s Rights Environmental Issues
Patients’ Right Domestic Violence

Legal advice is provided by the members of the academic staff of the Faculty of Law specializing in respective fields under the supervision of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, in collaboration with relevant governmental institutions and nongovernmental organizations. The Centre is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 8.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. with prior appointment.
