Message from the Dean

The Faculty of Medicine, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) was established in 2009 under a memorandum of understanding with the Faculty of Medicine (FOM), University of Ruhuna (UOR). The FOM UOR undertook to recruit the first two batches of KDU military medical students (MMS) and teaching them up to the second MBBS examination. Planning of the Medical faculty building, curriculum, recruiting and training of academic and non academic staff were done in collaboration with FOM UOR. The 1st  batch of 25 MMS belonged to the 27th intake of KDU. After the second MBBS course the para-clinical studies for the first two batches have been planned at KDU. From the 3rd batch onwards MMS were recruited directly to KDU. From the 3rd batch onwards the intake will be increased to 75 MMS. An ultra modern Medical Faculty is being constructed at KDU premises in Ratmalana which will be fully functional from end of 2012. This faculty will have well equipped state of art student and research laboratories providing teaching, training, and service and research facilities to students and teachers. The upcoming Teaching Hospital of KDU will be in Werahera, a few kilometers away from KDU. It will be 704 bedded hospital with all possible facilities for patients and students for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
The FOM KDU is the only medical school training military medical students in Sri Lanka. The uniqueness in the training of MMS is that they will be finishing their medical degree in five years during which a full medical curriculum and a military curriculum will be done. The curriculum followed by KDU is from the FOM Ruhuna. In addition to what has been adopted from Ruhuna, MMS will have to cover special subjects like aeronautical, naval, nuclear, biological and trauma medicine. The programme also trains undergraduate in behavioral science (personal and professional development , community and family health, research and ethics in preparation of making professional military medical officers. The curriculum of the medical course follows traditional teaching and learning methods.
Instead of 14 to 15 departments in other civilian Faculties KDU has created only three departments, namely Pre-clinical, Para-clinical and clinical sciences with only three department heads to administer them. There are 14 subject heads to manage who are under the guidance of the three HODs. The five year period covers ten semesters of academic work.
The faculty is blessed with a very skillful and a devoted staff consisting of senior professors and senior lecturers and non academic staff, trained at FOM UOR. The intention of the faculty is to become the best Medical faculty in Sri Lanka and one of the best in South Asia producing excellent MMS as expressed in the Vision and Mission statements of the faculty.
