Media Briefing and Signing of MOU for The Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Maintenance Degree

In keeping with the national policy of elevating Sri Lanka into an Educational and Aviation Hub in the South Asian Region and with a view of expanding the aviation education in the country, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering implement a new degree programme, Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Aircraft Maintenance, from year 2018 onwards in collaboration with SriLankan Aviation College of SriLankan Airlines, which is the national carrier of the country.

For the newly introduced four year full time degree programme  the students will be enrolled through KDU  and they will undergo the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approved Basic Course in Aircraft Maintenance (category B1.1  or B2) at Sri Lankan Technical Training (STT) the Aircraft Maintenance Training arm of SriLankan Aviation College (SLAC) during the first two years. After successful completion of the initial programme, undergraduates will continue the programme for another one and half years at KDU enhancing their knowledge in the field of aviation and finally they will proceed to SLAC to attend the six months internship/On the Job Training (OJT) to complete the degree programme.

The students, who successfully complete the four-year programme, will be awarded with BSc (Honours) in Aircraft Maintenance degree offered by KDU and EASA Part 147 Certificate of recognitionissued by SLAC. Further, during the initial OJT period, SLAC will provide Level 2 Type training and Certificate (on successful completion of one of the Aircraft Type operated by SriLankan Airlines e.g. A320/A330). On completion of the degree program the students may also be eligible to complete a further 18 months OJT which will lead towards receiving the EASA Aircraft Maintenance Licence (AML). The new degree programme will definitely benefit both local and foreign students and they will have the opportunity of becoming professionals in the aviation field within a short span of five years after leaving the school.

With the introduction of this collaborative academic programme, KDU is expected to attract enthusiastic young generation in the country to join the aviation field and assist the fulfilment of their life time dream of becoming an experts / professionals in this lucrative industry.

The media briefing for the introduction of the collaborative degree programme and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding was held on 04 January 2018. The event was attended by Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral JJ Ranasinghe, DVC (Def & admin) IP Ranasinghe, DVC (Academic) Prof Jayantha Ariyrathne, Dean FOE Dr. (Mrs) Kumari Fernando, Dean FMSH Dr. (Mrs) RMNT Sirisoma, Department Aeronautical Engineering Wg Cdr CJ Hettiarachchi and other members of the KDU. Further, CEO SriLankan Airlines Capt. Suren Rattwatte, GM SriLankan Aviation College Mr. Primal De Silva and the other Engineering instructors attended the function.

Actg Registrar, Adjutant and academic staff of Department of Aeronautical Engineering attended the media briefing.

The MOU was signed by the Vice Chancellor and the CEO SriLankan Airlines during the media briefing ceremony.
