Soft opening of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University Hospital

Soft opening of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University Hospital was held on 21st May 2017. His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the chief guest. The KDU Hospital will be opened to the public soon.

This hospital is located in Werahara in 15 acre land. With the initiation of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, the requirement of a University Hospital arose; therefore the establishment of KDU hospital commenced in 2009.

From the initial discussion stages, it was decided to include unique features to the hospital with modern facilities for patient treatment and training of MBBS and Allied Health Sciences Undergraduates. The hospital consists of 814 beds with all the modern facilities with state of the art equipment, procedures and treatment options that are unmatched and are in fact few and far between even in the region.

The Hospital has twenty operation theatres and among them the Hybrid Theatre is unique since its novel concept in medical treatments and it is Sri Lanka’s first in its kind. Other theatres are also specialized theatres constructed according to ISO level 5 standards. The Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital is a vast 70 bed unit featuring individual rooms for each of its patients.

A specialised team of expert professionals including physicians, researches, laboratory staff, pharmacists, radiologists and nurses relentlessly focus on the patients at the KDU Hospital.

As this hospital is the training and the internship centre for the KDU Medical Faculty and Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, MBBS and Allied Health Sciences students of KDU will be well versed in the practical aspects of medical care. This in turn will enable them to provide skilled, competent and nurturing healthcare to the patients.

Further, facilities at the Hospital is not limited to medical care; a state of the art auditorium equipped with all modern facilities at the hospital premises provides the ideal venue for international level conferences and seminars as well as ideal teaching facilities as it is equipped with audio video equipment enabling live viewing and questioning of operations and other clinical procedures. All theatres and clinics are permanently equipped with such facilities enabling easy observation and Q & A sessions.

The third floor of one of the buildings at the hospital converges with the rooftop of another building to form a scenic rooftop garden spanning 4 acres which is the ideal spot to take a break from any medical conference takes place in the auditorium on the same level or for children from the paediatric ward situated on the third floor to feel that they are in an eco-friendly environment. The large green garden also provides an additional environmentally friendly option maintaining eco-friendly nature.

All these state of the art facilities are made available to patients from all walks of life; it may be VVIP guests, international dignitaries, the members of the tri-forces, expatriates or all Sri Lankan citizens. As KDU is dedicated ‘for the motherland forever’, it is proud to announce that the hospital care and healthcare services are offered free of charge, while also housing paid rooms on offer.

The hospital also has the distinction of being the only government hospital with an IVF and Fertility Care Centre. Since the hospital is situated in Werahara, Boralesgamuwa, it offers a central location for those from outside suburbs as well as for those travelling on the Southern Expressway for quick access.
