Brigadier Aruna Sirilal Ariyasinghe was born in Ambalangoda on 26th April 1965. Having completed his school education at Dharmashoka College Ambalangoda he was enlisted in the Army on 17th January 1986 as an officer cadet. On completion of Military Training at Sri Lanka Military Academy Diyatalawa, he earned his commission as a Second Lieutenant and was posted to the 6th Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery on 10th December 1986.
Brigadier Aruna Ariyasinghe started his career as a Troop Commander and was deployed on Counter Terrorist Operations in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Since then he had taken part in most of the Major Counter Terrorist Operations conducted in Sri Lanka whilst holding different responsibilities in various appointments and ranks. He has a long service experience in the field of Counter Terrorist Operations. Brigadier Ariyasinghe had commanded the 7th Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery for two years from 2006 – 2007 in the Eastern Theater of Operation where the Humanitarian Operation started at Mavil Aru in 2006. He discharged his responsibilities as the Artillery Adviser to the Security Force Commander East and Artillery Coordinator for the Humanitarian Operation conducted in the East.
Later in December 2007 he was appointed as the Brigade Commander 591 Infantry Brigade under 59 Division and engaged with Humanitarian Operation conducted in the North throughout. After termination of the Humanitarian Operations in May 2009, during post conflict recovery era he had contributed immensely on resettling of displaced civilians and nation building tasks under government reconciliation process. After serving 3 year in Mullatiu, October 2010 he was appointed as the Area commander Galle, Brigade commander 121 Brigade and Brigade commander 141 Brigade at Boossa until September 2013. Then he was appointed as the Brigade Commander 661 Brigade Pooneryne until August 2014. He has held number of staff appointments both in war and peace environment from Grade II staff officer at Directorate of Plans Army Headquarters, Brigade Major 562 Brigade, Staff officer Grade I at President Security Division and Deputy Military Liaison Officer at Ministry of Defence.
Having graduated from the school of Artillery, Oklahoma USA in 2002, he proceeded to follow a Senior Command Course at war college, Mhow - India and obtained his diploma in Senior Level Defence Management from University of Indore in 2007. Brigadier Ariyasinghe is an alumna of the prestigious National Defence University - Pakistan and has obtained a Master’s Degree in National Security and War Studies along with the title of “ndu” in 2016. He is also an alumna of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and has obtained his Master’s Degree in Management in 2015. In addition that he has participated in a number of military training courses, seminars and workshops in different countries.
For his bravery demonstrated in the face of the enemy during counter terrorist operations he was awarded with RANAWICKRAMA GALANTRY MEDAL and RANASURA GALANTRY MEDAL for three consecutive times. He was further awarded with nine other military and service medals. He is married to Shirani Ariyasinghe and blessed with a son Pathum (24 years) and two daughters Anupama (22 years) and Chethana (14 years).
