Jaffna University team emerged overall champions in the “KDU Leaders’ Trophy Soccer” defeating General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) team by a three to one in an excitingly contested competition filled with pleasure at the KDU soccer grounds, Ratmalana on 27th September 2014.
The leading KDU team in a fiercely contested competition in the first half for one to nil, however, was easily defeated by Jaffna University team in its second half amidst applause by many spectators including the Vice chancellor KDU Major General Milinda Peiris who witnessed the competition which aimed at strengthening friendly ties among undergraduate youths in Sri Lankan universities.
The South Eastern University, achieved the third place in the overall competition beating Eastern University, by three to nil. S. Gnana Rooban in the Jaffna University team was the best player while Officer Cadet Rajapakse in KDU team was nominated as the Best Goal Keeper in the two day competition.
“KDU Leaders’ Trophy Soccer” was started on 26th September 2014 for its fourth consecutive year and the final day (27th September) concluded amidst a large gathering of spectators as the sports tournament coincidently coincided with “KDU Open Day”. Many public who visited KDU on “KDU Open Day” also joined with sports fans to witness the final soccer match between KDU and the Jaffna University.
Soccer teams of University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, University of Sri Jayawardenepura, University of Sabaragamuwa, University of Uva Wellassa and Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SIIT) were also among the contestants in this year’s competition.
Major General Milinda Peiris, the Chief Guest of the soccer competition finals awarded the trophies to the winners. While congratulating the winning team, the chief guest also highlighted the importance of active participation by university youths in sports competitions of this nature solidifying comradeship.
