The 814 bed teaching hospital is to comprise of all the ultra-modern facilities with cutting edge technology to provide around the clock emergency and trauma care and specialized treatment of diseases of all the branches of medicine, surgery, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology as well as other medical and surgical specialties. The hospital will be staffed by a dedicated team of healthcare professions to provide the best quality care to the patients.

The soft opening of the University Hospital of General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University was held on 21st May 2017. His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena graced this occasion. This state of the art hospital situated in Werahara houses 70 ICU/ HDU beds, a cardiac catheterization laboratory, oncology unit and 20 modular theatres, among them a unique hybrid theatre, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. The hospital is due to be open to the public soon with clinical services in operation at the Out-Patients and Accident & Emergency Departments, in major specialties including General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Laboratory and radiological services will provide round the clock clinical support services through their state of the art facilities. Other facilities provided on site include bank outlets, cafeterias, shops, pharmacies and a 50-room hotel for relatives to stay close to their loved ones.

As the hospital is situated in Werahara, Boralesgamuwa, it offers a central location for those from outside suburbs as well as for those travelling on the Southern Expressway for quick access.

 

Like any other state hospital, UHKDU hopes to provide medical services to general public and service personnel free of charge. This in turn will enable UHKDU to develop skilled, competent and nurturing healthcare professionals through exposure to wider range of health care settings. High-end facilities available for clinical training will be a future attraction for local & international medical and allied health sciences students.

The paying section of the hospital includes 50 paying beds and 6 suites with 120 consultation rooms for private consultation facilities. This will enable the public to consult island wide top consultants from all medical & surgical specialties.

Further, facilities at the Hospital are not limited to medical care; a state of the art auditorium equipped with all modern facilities at the hospital premises provides the ideal venue for international level conferences and seminars as well as ideal teaching facilities enabling live audio video demonstrations of surgical and other clinical procedures. With all this the hospital will be able to provide tertiary care facilities to the general public and service personnel while training both undergraduate and post graduate military medical students and allied health staff from Sri Lanka and foreign countries. The hospital will also engage in high quality research.
