Commencement of the Cochlear Implantation Program at the University Hospital, Kotelawala Defence University

Cochlear Implantation surgery helps to restore hearing in patients, who has got profound hearing loss due to varies reasons.  ENT department of University Hospital Kotelawala Defence University started the Cochlear Implantation program on 09th of August 2021 and did the first Cochlear Implantation surgery for a 1 year and 9 months old girl who has lost her hearing from birth. Ministry of Health provided the Cochlear Implant and University Hospital – KDU did the surgery free of charge. Dr Vasanthika S Thuduvage (Head of the ENT Department, Consultant ENT surgeon – UHKDU highlighted that the commencement of Cochlear implantation program is a mile stone achievement in the department of ENT- UHKDU. Dr ADKSN Yasawardena (Consultant ENT Surgeon – Lady Ridgeway Hospital Borella) and Dr Daminda Dumigoarachchi (Consultant ENT Surgeons – Apeksha Hospital Maharagama) gave helping hands to make the program success. Program was launched under the guidance of Vice Chancellor KDU Major general Milinda Pieris, Executive Director Dr Jayan Mendis, Director Medical Service Brigadier (Dr) PS Thilakarathne, Director Administration Colonel EMGHJB Dehideniya and with the help of other military and civil staff.
