KDU Commences General Convocation 2020

The General Convocation 2020 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University ceremonially commenced at the Eagles’ Lakeside Banquet and Convention Hall, Attidiya on 17th January 2021, and its first six sessions were successfully completed with the participation of the Chancellor, General GH De Silva (Retd) gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Due to the current pandemic situation, the Convocation 2020 was planned to be conducted in seven separate sessions on four different days with strict precautionary measures as per the health guidelines, and the first six sessions were planned to be conducted at the Eagles’ Lakeside Banquet and Convention Hall, Attidiya on 17th 18th and 19th January. The final session will be held at the BMICH on 16th February 2021.

1140 graduands of Master’s and Bachelor’s degree programmes received their parchments witnessed by their parents and loved ones as well as the Faculty members. The award winners of these six sessions are as follows.

  • WGS Deemantha – Trophy for the Best Student Officer in Leadership Studies awarded by Air Vice Marshal PM Fernando VSV, psc
  • M Premathilake – Trophy for the Best Overall Performance in BSc Management Degree Programme awarded by the Vice Chancellor of KDU
  • OC Dewanarayana – Trophy for the Best Student in Electrical & Electronic Engineering awarded by KDU
  • HPAM Siriwardana – Trophy for the Best Student in Civil Engineering awarded by KDU
  • TD Munasinghe – Trophy for the Best Student in Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering awarded by KDU
  • T Dharmarathne – Trophy for the Best Student Officer in Marine Engineering awarded by KDU
  • AHL Cooray – Trophy for the Best Student in Mechanical Engineering awarded by KDU
  • Binod Lamichhane – Trophy for the Best Student in Aeronautical Engineering, awarded by Air Vice Marshal U Wanasinghe B.Sc.(Cey.), USP, psc
  • SI Munasinghe – Trophy for the Best Student in Mechatronic Engineering awarded by KDU
  • AHS Rasangi – Trophy for the Best Student in Biomedical Engineering awarded by KDU
  • MMIM Peiris – Trophy for the Best Student Officer in Strategic & Defence Studies awarded by Major General CAMN Silva VSV, USP, USAWC.
  • JLPG Hasarangi – Trophy for the Best Student Officer in Leadership Studies awarded by Air Vice Marshal PM Fernando VSV ,psc.
  • RAS Wijesinghe –  Gold Medal for Anatomy, Gold Medal for Biochemistry and Gold Medal for Overall Best Performance at the Second MBBS Examination (Academic) Awarded by the KDU.
  • RAS Wijesinghe and A Inayath –  Gold Medal for Physiology awarded by the KDU.
  • CA Wewalaarachchi –  Gold Medal for Parasitology awarded by the KDU.
  • AHCJ Weerakoon – Gold Medal for Pathology, Gold Medal for Paediatrics, Gold Medal for Overall Best Performance at the Final MBBS Examination (Academic) awarded by the KDU and Brigadier (Dr) MH De Zoysa Memorial Gold Medal for Surgery awarded by Dr. Nandrani S. De Zoysa and Prof. MHJ Ariyaratne Gold Medal for Overall Best Performance at the Final MBBS Examination (Cumulative) awarded by prof. MHJ Ariyaratne in memory of his Parents Mr. MH Henry Ariyaratne, and Mrs. NA Leela Ariyaratne.
  • FA Azmeer – Gold Medal for Psychiatry awarded by the KDU and Gold Medal for Medicine awarded by Dr. Namal Wijesinghe in memory of his parents Dr. Thejasiri Wijesinghe and Mrs. Kamala Wijesinghe.
  • WST Fernando – Gold Medal for Obstetrics & Gynecology awarded by the KDU

 

Delivering the convocation address, the Chancellor emphasized on the important role played by the University in producing high quality and disciplined graduates for the Tri-Services as well as for the nation. Further, he declared that the dividends of the KDU’s move to enable civilian day-scholars to follow degree programmes together with officer cadets could be seen in the future through civil military relations in the country. While congratulating the newly graduated, the Chancellor reminded them of their future role towards the progression of the nation. He also appreciated the contribution of the leadership and the academic and other staff of KDU in carrying out its mission.

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence university led by Vice Chancellor, Major General Milinda Peiris conveys its warmest greetings and congratulations to all the new graduates for their hard-earned academic credentials, and it welcomes all of them to its great fraternity to shoulder the future challenges of the mother Lanka. KDU also congratulates all the foreign graduands graduated at this convocation and conveys its greetings to their loved ones as well as their respective nations. KDU enjoys the humble pride of being an agent for strengthening Sri Lanka’s friendly and cordial relations with those countries through this educational partnership, and it is looking forward to strengthening its network further as a globally recognized university of a unique nature.
