KDU Commences General Convocation 2021
The General Convocation 2021 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University ceremonially commenced at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Graduate Studies of KDU from 29th November 2021. Due to the current pandemic situation, the Convocation 2021 was planned to be conducted in eleven separate sessions on six different days with strict precautionary measures as per the health guidelines, and the first ten sessions were conducted at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Graduate Studies of KDU, successfully held from 29th November 2021 to 2nd November 2021. The final session will be held at the BMICH on 25th November, and His Excellency the President will grace the occasion as the chief guest at the final session.
General (Retd) GH De Silva RWP VSV USP ndc, the Chancellor of KDU graced the first four sessions as the Chief Guest. Delivering the convocation addresses at each sessions, the Chancellor emphasized on the important role played by the University as a premier institution of higher education with a unique role maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence and in producing high-quality and disciplined graduates for the Tri-Services as well as for the nation. Addressing the newly graduated, the Chancellor advised them to maintain their bonds of fraternity and to interact with each other throughout life. While congratulating the newly graduated, the Chancellor reminded them of their future role towards the progression of the nation. The Chancellor also spoke about the benefactor of KDU, the late Prime Minister, General Sir John Kotelawala and the great qualities he possessed as a popular politician, gentleman, an accomplished soldier, a Colonial “Pukka Sahib” and a Freedom Fighter, He also extended his profound thanks to the Vice Chancellor, Major General MP Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil for his immeasurable contribution to the progression of the KDU, The Chancellor applauded him for his dedication and devotion to duty and his great achievements.
Major General Milinda Peiris, Vice Chancellor of KDU graced rest six sessions as the Chief Guest from the fifth session to the tenth session. In his convocation addresses Vice Chancellor expressed that KDU is proud to have produced these graduates to shoulder responsibilities as educated and patriotic citizens to serve the nation in their respective fields. He further declared that the dividends of the KDU’s move to enable civilian day-scholars to follow degree programmes together with officer cadets could be seen in the future through civil military relations in the country. He also appreciated the contribution of the leadership and the academic and other staff of KDU in carrying out its mission.
1407 graduands of Master’s and Bachelor’s degree programmes received their parchments witnessed by their parents and loved ones as well as the Faculty members. The award winners of these ten sessions are as follows:

AKS Perera – Trophy for the Best Student Officer in Leadership Studies awarded by Air Vice Marshal PM Fernando VSV, psc
AW Withana – Trophy for the Best Student in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, awarded by Mrs. Nilanthi Fernando in memory of her late husband Cmde. EMK Fernando, SLN, MSc (DS), CEng, psc
IE Vidyananda – Trophy for the Best Student in Civil Engineering awarded by the KDU
SMRP Amarasooriya – Trophy for the Best Student in Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering awarded by the KDU
SAN Kulasinghe – Trophy for the Best Student in Mechatronic Engineering awarded by the KDU
HUCL Jayakody – Trophy for the Best Student Officer in Marine Engineering awarded by the KDU
ANRV Wickramanayake – Trophy for the Best Student in Mechanical Engineering awarded by the KDU
MGSJB Meddegoda – Trophy for the Best Student in Bio Medical Engineering awarded by the KDU
WDA Sammana – Trophy for the Best Student in Air Craft Maintenance Engineering awarded by the KDU
ADM Rajakaruna – Trophy for the Best Overall Performance in BSc Management Degree Programme awarded by the Vice Chancellor of KDU
General Sir John Kotelawala Defence university conveys its warmest greetings and congratulations to all the new graduates for their hard-earned academic credentials, and it welcomes all of them to its great fraternity to shoulder the future challenges of the mother Lanka. KDU also congratulates all the foreign graduands graduated at this convocation and conveys its greetings to their loved ones as well as their respective nations.
