National Security Concerns

At present, the situation of the world is complicated due to various factors; mainly those can be observed in the economic, political, military, religious and social segment. Main influencing factors in the world affairs at present is the terrorism and extremism which is destabilising in the Middle East and African region having implications in other regions as well. They have extended their activities beyond their boundaries. Recently intelligence sources have revealed approximately 50 Sri Lankans fighting in Syria and Iraq for Islamic State (IS). Therefore, it is evident that global terrorism has expanded their network into Sri Lanka too. The incident took place in the recent past related to Islamic extremism element’s activities may have fuelled the IS fantasy in some part of the country. With the expansion of Islamic extremist movements such as Sri Lanka Thawhidh Jamad (SLTJ), Buddhist extremist movements may raise as a countermeasure. These circumstances may have a negative impact on the social and religious harmony of the country.
