‘Megha’ Book Launch and Certificate Awarding Ceremony of the Creative Writing Competition – 2020

The ‘Megha’ book launch and Certificate Awarding Ceremony of the Creative Writing Project- 2020 was successfully conducted by the Department of Languages (DoL), FMSH- KDU and the English Literary Association (ELA) of KDU on 3rd December 2021 at the Main Auditorium of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Chief Guest of the event was Major General Milinda Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, while the Guest of Honour was Professor Sunethra Kankanamge from the Department of Sinhala and Mass Communication, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Also present were Deans of Faculties, Directors of Centres, Academia of faculties, winners and short-listed winners of ‘Megha’ publication. The event was live-streamed by KDU Media Unit and students of KDU joined the proceedings live via Zoom technology.

A dramatic adaptation of a winning short story entry, poetry readings from ‘Megha’, a visual poem based on a winning entry and a musical adaptation of a winning poem were the highlighted performances of the day, and certificates were awarded by the Vice Chancellor to winners of the Creative Writing Competition. Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor emphasized that all faculties should get together to produce such creative outputs in future, and commended the efforts of the Department of Languages in executing the initiative amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking at the event, Prof. Sunethra Kankanamge the Guest of Honour highlighted that it is essential to understand creativity as the ‘Beauty of the mind’, while it was explained that a creative generation is an essential requirement in developing a peaceful society in a country.

Delivering the Vote of Thanks, Major Wimansha Abeyawickrama, Head-Department of Languages, KDU thanked all those involved in making the project a success, including the ELA and Coordinator of the event Ms. Krishanthi Anandawansa. The event winded up with another amazing performance by the ‘Beige Band’ of KDU, followed by refreshments.
